Detroit Tutoring Project – August 15 & 16, 2013

Our unit was asked by a teacher at Centro de San Jose tutoring project in southwest Detroit serving the Hispanic community for grade school students to provide a workshop on culinary herbs. The center has approximately 24 students in grades 2nd – 8th.  In the month of August the staff likes to provide an enrichment program focusing mainly on the arts and this year August 15-16 was planting an herb garden.

Several members of the Southeast Michigan Unit of The Herb Society of America, ran a workshop about culinary herbs for 21  children at Centro de San Jose. We presented a one hour program on August 15 & 16.  The first day was growing and caring for your garden, the second day was about using and tasting.   Judy and Carol led the presentation and each child planted a pot with lemon thyme, cilantro, oregano and mint to take home.

The herbs were donated by members of the Southeast Michigan Unit of the Herb Society of America from their home gardens.
