Welcome to the The Herb Society of America – The Southern Michigan Unit website.  We are the south east Michigan local chapter of the The Herb Society of America.

Our mission, like our parent group’s, The Herb Society of America, is dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research and sharing the experience of our members with the community.

Membership is open to anyone who is interested in herbs.

This site will lead you through our events (past and future), feature our Herb Garden at Cranbrook House and Gardens, and provide access to our recipe files.

Our local unit is comprised of about 16 members with over 300 years of herbal gardening experience.  We hope this website will bring you new knowledge and inspiration for the use of herbs and you will come back often to visit.

Enjoy!

If you are interested in joining our unit, please send an email with your request to hsasmu@gmail.com.  We would love to have you join us, all you need is an interest in herbs.

Learn, Explore, Grow with us.

It is the policy of our unit and The Herb Society of America not to advise or recommend herbs for medicinal or health use. This information is intended for educational purposes only and should not be considered as a recommendation or an endorsement of any particular medical or health treatment.

  1. I would be very interested in learning more about your organization and its meetings. Please add me to your email list. Thank you, Marilyn

  2. Hello, Carol,
My name is Janet Macunovich and I am in charge of volunteers who garden at the Waterford Township library. We meet on second Wednesday of the month to work in the gardens, then move indoors to the library to learn something. The group would love to learn how to use one’s home-grown herbs. Is there a HSA SMU member able to talk with us? It is a very small group, usually 20 or so (but the library does open the meeting to interested patrons so once in a while our topic draws more), with only a $150 honorarium to offer but we’re fun people and open on dates. My phone is 248-681-7850 and email is JanetandSteven@GardenAtoZ.com

  3. Hello,
I am new to Michigan (returned after too many years away).
Herbs have been a hobby of mine for several years. Are there any local resources for a wide variety of herbal plants in the Hillsdale county area?
    Thank you

    • Hi Kathleen,
      Welcome back to Michigan.
Susan Betz who grows herbs and has authored several books about growing and using herbs, lives in Hillsdale.
Her recommendation is Willow Garden in Hanover.

  4. Dear Carol,
Saw your presentation at Bogie Lake Greenhouse a year ago and wondering if you speak at Garden Club meetings. I am booking speakers for our 2019/2020 year for the Milford Garden Club. I really enjoyed your talk on herbs and using them in recipes. We meet the 2nd Thursday of the month in the evening. I am looking at Thursday, July 9, 2020. Please respond.

    • Hi Barb,
Thanks for contacting me. I would love to be your speaker next July…but…I am blind as a bat at night. However there are several members of my unit that would excellent
      choices.
Let me see who might be available.

    • Hi Marjorie,
The Southern Michigan Unit meets from September to
June on the first Wednesday of the month in members homes. We also maintain two herb gardens at Cranbrook House and Gardens. We usually meet in the gardens on Thursdays. As part of our educational program we have partnered with Telly’s and Goldner Walsh Nurseries to present programs to the public.
I have added your name to our email list and will invite you to attend our activities.

  5. Hello
I am located in Hillsdale County, Michigan. I would be interested in information about your group, meetings, location, events, and possible membership.

    • Dear Elaine,
I am happy you found us. We have 16 members. We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 10:30am, usually in a members home. If we have members who work, we meet in the evening. We have maintained two herb gardens at historic Cranbrook House and Gardens for 50 years! We supply the plants and staff the Herb Booth at their annual Spring Sale which is coming up, May 14th and 15th. We also do classes and workshops during the year at Telly’s Greenhouse and Goldner Walsh Nursery. We study growing and using a variety of herbs during the year. I will send you an email with information about our next meeting.
